These sightseers got hit with a wave of regret, among other things.

Tourists narrowly escaped their demise after being hit by a monster wave while taking pictures on the edge of a cliff in the Canary Islands.

A group of tourists was captured on camera near the Faro de Sardina del Norte in Gran Canaria, standing on a ledge of rocks as waves were crashing.

The harrowing event was filmed and later shared on Instagram.

According to local reports, the travelers ignored the warning signs and went through the protective fencing around the cliffs anyway.

They were seen taking photos with their phones while standing close to the edge of the cliffs, which drop over 66 feet, as the waves got harder and stronger.

One man in particular stood at the edge of the rocks while a woman sat on a rock nearby capturing the moment with her phone taking photos and videos.

But their photoshoot quickly came to a halt as a massive wave crashed into the rocks and sent a gush of water over their heads, sending the tourists running for safety on higher ground.

“Once again, lives are put at risk by ignoring safety barriers at one of the most dangerous points on our coastline,” Canarias 1500 Km de Costa, the association for the prevention of accidents in aquatic environments, warned, per Canarian Weekly.

Situations like this one endanger the tourists, but it also puts an additional burden on emergency services, who would have to respond under the extremely dangerous conditions if an accident does occur.

This is far from the first time a tourist was nearly killed due to a wave while sightseeing.

Back in December, a Chinese tourist narrowly escaped death after getting smashed onto rocks by a giant wave while sightseeing in Egypt.

The vacationer had reportedly been visiting the Matrouh Eye, and the tide crashed unexpectedly against the cliffs.

Just weeks ago, a coastguard officer died after being struck by a wave in Greece.

According to reports, the man was struck by a wave while urging fishermen to leave the harbor.
