MONTCLAIR, Calif. () — A jewelry store employee fought back against a masked man who appeared to be armed during an attempted robbery last week inside Montclair Place Mall, security video shows.
Alin Ouhan was minutes from closing at Fast-Fix Jewelry and Watch Repair when the man first walked in, telling her he was looking for a Valentine’s Day gift for his wife. Video shows him briefly leaving before returning and making threats.
“He said, ‘Oh, don’t do anything. Just open the window,’ and I see he has the gun,” Ouhan said.
Footage shows the man pull out his weapon and point it toward Ouhan.
“I was scared. I was scared so much,” she said.
Despite her fear, Ouhan fought back, engaging in a struggle with the man before he used the gun to shatter a display case. As he attempted to grab jewelry, Ouhan swung at him.
“She’s very brave, definitely. I wouldn’t want her to do it again,” said Ohans, the store’s owner.
Ohans said the incident unfolded on Thursday while he was away. He credited Ouhan with fending off the would-be robber and protecting the family business. Still, he warned others not to take similar risks.
“I appreciate what she had did. We are really grateful having her around, but I would definitely not recommend to any business owner or any of their employees to take such an action like that. You don’t know what to expect,” he said.
Montclair police said the man appeared to have fled empty-handed. Investigators recovered his weapon, which they said was an unloaded BB gun.
Officers are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to come forward.
