PASADENA, Calif. () — A man was taken into custody after a threat was made against Huntington Hospital in Pasadena on Friday, according to the facility.
“Huntington Hospital received a threat today via phone to our facility. We immediately notified the Pasadena Police Department, which responded swiftly and has reported this individual is now in custody,” the hospital said in a statement.
Investigators tracked down the suspect in Los Angeles. Authorities said the suspect was a patient at the hospital earlier in the day. A motive is unclear.
Pasadena city spokesperson Lisa Derderian described the threat credible.
Dr. Katarzyna Twardowska said she was treating patients before the hospital went into lockdown.
“We locked all the doors, and we were looking for a safe space to hide in case something happens,” Twardowska said. “There was a lot of confusion.”
Joquin Aboytes had just arrived to visit a loved one and was blocked from getting in.
“I’m looking at the windows, looking at the building imagining a bunch of things,” he said.
The lockdown was lifted once authorities realized the threat wasn’t real.
The arrest comes after two swatting calls this week in Southern California that prompted a response from police.
On Wednesday, nearly 200 law enforcement officers rushed to a hospital in Loma Linda after a report of a possibly armed suspect. Police responded to Claremont McKenna College Thursday after an unidentified caller claimed they were holding someone hostage and threatened to carry out a shooting. Both of the incidents were determined to be hoaxes.
