AGOURA HILLS, Calif. () — A fast-moving storm brought strong rain and winds across Southern California overnight, creating hazardous conditions on freeways and requiring multiple water rescues.
Just before 2 a.m. Wednesday in Agoura Hills, the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a car that was trapped in a waterway at Triunfo Canyon Road. One man inside had to be rescued.
“I saw that the water was a little steep coming down the road, but even when I tried to back up, my car lost traction and it slid forward,” the man said.
He said he was a little shaken up, but is expected to be OK.
Over in Elysian Park, crews rescued at least one man trapped on an embankment by the L.A. River. Once he was hoisted out, he was taken to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia.
The overnight rain impacted traffic near the Getty Center and caused one car to crash into a tree off the 405 Freeway. The vehicle reportedly went airborne before crashing.
Several roadways also saw significant flooding. At one point, all northbound lanes were flooded near Sheldon Avenue, trapping at least one car in the water.
Winds also whipped the region, toppling some trees in Agoura Hills and Lancaster.
And Caltrans closed Topanga Canyon Boulevard out of concerns of mud and debris flows. The road was expected to reopen later Wednesday morning depending on weather conditions.
