36/36: ROWLAND SECURES MAIDEN VICTORY IN MEXICO CITY
With his energy down to 0.9%, British driver Oliver Rowland bested the fierce Porsche duo to claim his maiden victory in Mexico City. This victory marks a first win for Nissan in Season 11, recovering from bad luck in the season-opener in Sao Paulo.
33/36: ROWLAND LEADS AS SECOND SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
Oliver Rowland used up his final lap of ATTACK MODE, making up three places to gain the lead after brief contact with Antonio Felix da Costa almost caught them both out. The field has been re-neutralised after Mitch Evans pushed too hard and retired from the race.
The race was quickly resumed and Rowland flew ahead in an attempt to escape from the mighty Porsche duo.
32/36: SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
The Penske duo have managed to climb up to sixth and seventh place using their ATTACK MODE, putting up a real fight to the frontrunners. A double yellow flag was waved for the exit of Turn 12, where David Beckmann is stranded on the side of the road
A full Safety Car was deployed on Lap 30 as the Cupra Kiro failed to regain power after catching the corner of Turn 12. This is great news for drivers like Mitch Evans who have four minutes left of ATTACK MODE, running in eighth before the Safety Car.
The top three drivers have 21%-20% energy while Oliver Rowland instantly utilises his 1m30s left of ATTACK MODE to attack Jake Dennis. The British driver instantly jumped both Dennis and Pascal Wehrlein.
28/36: PORSCHE LEADING ANDRETTI
The top three riders all utilised ATTACK MODE heading into Lap 25, with Pascal Wehrlein snatching second place back from Andretti’s Jake Dennis. The two Andretti drivers have dropped to third and fourth place as they finally run out of their ATTACK MODE and are forced to conserve energy.
By Lap 27, the Andretti duo were split by an eager Oliver Rowland hoping to score a podium finish in Mexico. Antonio Felix da Costa leads the pack ahead of his teammate Pascal Wehrlein but they may fall under pressure from Rowland who boasts a six-minute reserve of ATTACK MODE.
24/36: WEHRLEIN ON THE HUNT
Pascal Wehrlein has the best-case scenario so far this race with his full ATTACK MODE this up for grabs. The German driver pushes his German car to the limit, putting up a fight with Nico Muller running in fourth place. The Porsche driver managed to find a way around the Andretti in the stadium section, climbing up to third behind his teammate.
19/36: DENNIS LED BUT DA COSTA SNATCHES IT BACK
Jake Dennis found himself in the lead after jumping the reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein on Lap 16. The Andretti driver leads the pack around the Mexico City track after a well-timed ATTACK MODE gave him the final push to overtake the Porsche.
However, Antonio Felix da Costa employed his ATTACK MODE to jump back up to the lead. Both drivers have used the same amount of ATTACK MODE but it was the former world champion who came out on top after Dennis failed to defend his attack around Turn 5.
15/36: FOUR-WAY BATTLE ALMOST DETHRONES WEHRLEIN
The Andretti duo have employed some great strategic decisions to boost their drivers into the top ten, but the best benefiting driver in this scenario has to be Jake Dennis. Nico Müller pushed ahead of the mid-pack using his ATTACK MODE, tailing behind his teammate Dennis as his mode was running out.
This set up Dennis perfectly for a four-way battle for the lead as the two Porsches have a slight scuffle heading into the final sector of the track. When Pascal Wehrlein had a slight stumble heading into the final sector, his Porsche teammate Antonio Felix da Costa came to the rescue. However, his defence fell short of the mighty Dennis coming off the back of his ATTACK MODE.
12/36: PASCAL PREVAILS
The reigning world champion has proved his dominance early on in the race, holding off a range of strong drivers such as his teammate and a speedy Oliver Rowland. The first third of the race saw the top nine drivers conserve their energy in a strategy most likely set to use ATTACK MODE in the closing stages of the race.
On Lap 11, Nyck de Vries and Nico Müller engaged in a fierce battle for ninth place as they finally utilised their ATTACK MODE. In a panic with his ATTACK MODE down to just two minutes, de Vries found himself under severe pressure from the Andretti driver.
The two young drivers battled it out across the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but it was Müller who prevailed. He managed to climb up to sixth place ahead of Maximilian Günther and Mitch Evans.
8/36: ATTACK MODE ON
More drivers are utilising ATTACK MODE while others conserve as much energy as possible. Rookie driver Taylor Barnard has shot up to 11th from 17th, pushing his ATTACK MODE to the limit. His McLaren teammate Sam Bird has also used some ATTACK MODE, overtaking his rookie teammate for 11th shortly after.
David Beckmann and Jake Hughes are pushing through their ATTACK MODE, but its results are less successful than the McLaren duo. Meanwhile, at the front of the pack, Pascal Wehrlein leads the grid around the track as he begins to pull 0.5s away from his teammate.
4/36: AN EARLY PORSCHE ESCAPE
The Porsche duo lead the pack around the iconic Mexico City track, with Pascal Wehrlein attempting to pull away from teammate Antonio Felix da Costa. Oliver Rowland snatches third place from Jean-Eric Vergne on the second lap, pulling off a quick overtake on the Penske driver. As Lap 2 ends, ATTACK MODE is looming ahead as the drivers approach Turn 15.
The pace of the GEN3 EVO car is tremendously quicker than its predecessor, giving drivers a great chance of overtaking on this notoriously tricky track. ATTACK MODE has been activated on Lap 4 for Taylor Barnard, sitting in 17th place trying to overtake Formula 2 grid-mate Zane Maloney. The rookie makes the pass, and climbs up to 15th by Lap 5.
1/36: LIGHTS OUT IN MEXICO!
The reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein leads the pack around the Autodrome Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, defending teammate António Félix da Costa around the narrow first corner. It’s a clean start in Mexico City as the pack begin to spread out heading into the stadium section, with the two Porsche drivers launching themselves ahead of the pack.
20:00: A SEASON FOR PORSCHE
The opening two rounds of Formula E’s 11th season have already identified one of the strongest championship contenders in Porsche. In what looks like a possible dominance impending, Porsche have just earned their first front row lockout of the season with Pascal Wehrlein taking pole ahead of António Félix da Costa.
Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E (Porsche), said: “Yeah, it was a very, very good qualifying from both and they said yesterday they were both not happy with the car.
“We improved a bit. I think we did the correct steps. This morning was a very tricky session in wet conditions, and qualifying went really well, Pascal a bit quicker than Antonio.
“Antonio was very strong throughout the whole qualifying, and then the last bit, Pascal made it.
“But I’m very happy for the whole team, for both drivers, and having a front row lockout is amazing, but we will have a long race ahead and there it counts.”
