Riverside Polytechnic High School students walk out of class to protest against ICE, immigration raids

RIVERSIDE, Calif. () — Students in Riverside participated in walkouts Thursday in protest of ongoing immigration raids in Southern California.

It’s one of a number of protests taking place ahead of a national shutdown set for Friday.

Close to 200 students at Riverside Poly High School walked out of class Thursday to protest the Trump administration’s use of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement all across the nation.

Students carried signs and walked down the middle of the street in front of the high school.

“I’m sick and tired of people being killed, of people being taken away from their families,” Haley Calabrese said.

“You can get felons and imprison them, people who’ve raped, killed and committed real crimes, instead of breaking apart all of these families,” another student, Eris Estrella, said.

There have already been a number of anti-ICE protests across Southern California in recent days.

These protests are growing in number after federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis during massive protests after the Trump administration’s large-scale deportation efforts there.

Many of these protesters say they live in fear.

“People at the protest were afraid to protest because they thought ICE was going to be here, and they thought ICE was going to hurt them,” said Calabrese.

“There’s a lot of students who’ve told me today that they’re scared about their mother, father, cousins and friends who go to this school,” Estrella added. “We used to be a mixing pot. We used to welcome people, and now we’re segregating people.”

The protest remained peaceful, with some students returning to class for a good portion of the day.

“You may have thousands of ICE members. You may have powerful leaders, but one thing you cannot do is terrorize us because there are hundreds of thousands of us, and we will be ready,” Aiden Murcray said.
