Every airport has its baggage, but some have more than others.
According to a recent report from AirHelp, an air passenger rights and flight tracking company, about 248 million passengers — about a quarter of the 1 billion passengers who departed from a US airport — experienced a flight delay or cancellation in 2025.
The 2025 USA Flight Disruption Report revealed which airports experience the most flight delays — and all of the main New York City hubs made the top 10.
Chicago O’Hare (ORD) was found to be the U.S. airport with the most delays in 2025, with 28% of all flights being delayed.
Denver International Airport (DEN) came in second place with 27% of delayed flights, followed by Miami International Airport (MIA) with 26% delayed.
However, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey had the most disruptions overall with 26% of all flights delayed and 2.7% of flights getting canceled.
New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) experienced 26% of flights getting delayed and 2.6% canceled in 2025, while John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) saw 25% of flights that had delays and 1.6% that were canceled.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, experienced the most cancellations, with 3% of all flights getting canceled.
Aside from the departure airport, the flight route a passenger is taking can impact delays and cancellations.
The most delayed route of 2025 was from Chicago to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Germany, with 46% of departures delayed. Another flight route to Frankfurt, departing from Washington Dulles (IAD), came in second place with 43% of flights delayed.
Miami International Airport (MIA) to São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) came in as the third most delayed route with 40% of flights departing late.
In fourth was Washington Dulles (IAD) to Newark Liberty (EWR) with 39% of flights departing late, followed by New York JFK (JFK) to Dubai (DXB), also with 39% delayed.
Summer and holiday travel seem to be when people experience the most flight delays, peaking in July with over 31% of passengers facing either a delay or cancellation.
June was the second most disrupted month, with 30% of flights being delayed or canceled, followed by December as the third most disrupted month overall.
Meanwhile, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) was named the busiest airport in the US, serving over 52 million passengers in 2025 — and 25% of those flights were delayed and 1.1% were canceled.
Though 74% of travelers flying out of Atlanta took off on time, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, also known as Honolulu International Airport (HNL), was the country’s most on-time airport, with 84% of departures taking off on time.
Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) was the second-most on-time airport, with 82% of flights taking off on time, followed by Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 80%.
