LAS VEGAS () — A mother shot and killed her pre-teen cheerleader daughter in a Las Vegas hotel room over the weekend, before turning the gun on herself and taking her own life, according to police.
The two were in town from Utah for a cheer competition, law enforcement officials said.
Their bodies were discovered Sunday afternoon in a room at the Rio Hotel & Casino near the Vegas Strip. A note was also left behind at the scene.
According to News, Metro police had been called on a request for a welfare check on the mother and daughter – first that morning when officers and hotel security knocked on their door and called into the room several times, but did not get a response.
That afternoon, however, police received additional requests to check on the mother and daughter – at which point they made the decision to enter the room.
When they entered the room around 2:30 p.m., they found both of them unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives were able to determine from their investigation so far that the mother shot her daughter before shooting herself.
The incident remains under investigation.
