Monterey Park community gathers for ‘Resiliency Day’ to honor victims of 2023 mass shooting

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. () — Community members gathered on Saturday for what they called “Resiliency Day,” marking the third anniversary of the mass shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio that left 11 people dead and nine others wounded in Monterey Park.

In January 2023, a 72-year-old gunman opened fire inside the dance studio before later taking his own life.

Kristenne Reidy, whose father was among those killed, said returning to Monterey Park for the anniversary is meaningful for her family.

“I am so grateful to be here, to be able to bring the kids to this event where they can enjoy Monterey Park, where I grew up and where my dad raised us,” she said. She added that her father loved both his grandchildren and the city. “It feels like this is a great way for us to remember him and enjoy the city that he loved.”

The event featured several speakers as well as therapeutic activities including art, yoga, music and dancing — something that meant a lot to the victims.

“This year we really wanted to take it and make it an event of hope and family and healing and moving forward,” said Diana Garcia, the assistant city manager for Monterey Park.

Andrea Tseng, the director of older adult services at the Chinatown Service Center, said the goal was to show ongoing support. “We want to deliver a message that we are with them, we remember, and we’re still with them, and we support them,” she said.

Community leaders also shared plans for a memorial they hope to build at a nearby park. The proposal includes planting 11 trees — one for each victim — and creating a dance floor with a view of the San Gabriel Mountains. Organizers said victims’ families have been involved in shaping the design.

“They came and theycontributed their opinions. They gave a lot of ideas, but in one word: they are strong,” said Peter Ng, the president of the Chinatown Service Center.

Design plans for the memorial are expected to be presented to the Monterey Park City Council on Wednesday, with hopes of breaking ground later this year.
