CULVER CITY, Calif. () — A special dinner was held Wednesday night in Culver City to honor the journey and experiences of refugees.
Nearly 100 people gathered at The Wende Museum for a Syrian dinner and a night of Afghan music. The event was hosted by Miry’s List, a community refugee services organization based in Los Angeles.
“These are hard times,” said Miry’s List Founder Miry Whitehill. “Moving to a new place is extremely difficult, and when you factor in leaving quickly, under duress, not speaking the language, feeling a sense of home sickness, and loneliness … these are things that make it all the more difficult for refugees.”
Whitehill founded the organization nearly a decade ago and said under the Trump administration, resources and pathways for refugees seeking asylum have been severely reduced, except for special immigrant visas for refugees who helped the U.S. military in Afghanistan.
“We have more than 60 families in our program who have arrived to the U.S. since March of 2025,” she said.
Miry’s List has been a great source of help for Ahmad Roman, who received his asylum status in four years ago.
“Miry’s List supported me to bring my wife and my daughter to the U.S.,” said Roman, who now works with Mary’s List by helping other refugees connect with neighbors.
“There are so many ways to get involved in supporting the new arrival community through Mary’s List,” said Whitehill. “You can send someone a housewarming gift, you can sign up to be an English tutor and help someone practice English. You can make a donation, you can give your time.”
