A Georgia man is accused of killing his girlfriend’s baby after he told deputies that the 6-month-old boy became “unresponsive” in his care, according to authorities.
Willie George Northern Jr., of Kathleen, is charged with murder, cruelty to children and tampering with evidence in the baby’s death, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Wednesday, January 7.
Information on Northern’s legal representation was not immediately available.
Deputies were called to an “infant not breathing” at a home in Macon the evening of Sunday, January 4, where they spoke with Northern, 24, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputies learned that he made the 911 call.
Northern told deputies that he “was watching his girlfriend’s newborn son” and “fed, swaddled, then laid the infant to rest,” authorities said.
Northern said that he put the baby, Myles Walker, on an air mattress and took a shower, according to an incident report viewed by The Macon Telegraph.
Following the shower, the incident report said “he observed Myles laying face down in the bedding” and called 911, explaining the baby “was having difficulty breathing,” the newspaper reported.
Northern’s girlfriend was said to be away at work at the time.
Ultimately, Myles was taken to a children’s hospital, where staff learned the boy “was suffering from severe injuries and was in critical condition,” the sheriff’s office said.
Myles was then airlifted to another medical facility, the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, according to authorities.
He had multiple brain bleeds and a broken collarbone, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones told WMAZ-TV.
Myles ultimately died of his injuries two days later, on Tuesday, January 6, according to the sheriff’s office.
Northern was initially arrested on charges of cruelty to children and tampering with evidence after authorities said he was questioned in connection with the baby’s injuries.
He was later charged with Myles’ murder, the sheriff’s office said.
Julie Harrell, who is a property manager of the Macon home where Myles lived with his mother, told WMAZ-TV that the baby “was absolutely precious.”
“I’m devastated for her and for their family,” Harrell added, referring to Myles’ mother.
A next-door neighbor of Myles’ mother, Christy Holt, reacted to the news of the boy’s death and told the TV station: “I’m a mother of three, and just to hear that, I’m almost like going to cry.”
“I don’t know the circumstances or anything, but that is terrible, that is really terrible,” Holt said.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Us Weekly.
Northern was supposed to be at his Kathleen home when he was watching Myles, as he was under house arrest, WMAZ-TV reported, citing Houston County District Attorney Eric Edwards.
Northern needed authorization from a judge to visit his girlfriend’s home in Macon, Edwards said, according to the TV station.
Northern was on house arrest in connection with an alleged armed robbery out of Houston County, where Northern and a woman are accused of robbing a man at gunpoint in November 2024, WMAZ-TV reported.
He has since pleaded not guilty in that case, according to The Macon Telegraph.
