NEW YORK () — A woman visiting New York City from Jurupa Valley was changing her 10-month-old daughter in a seventh-floor restroom at a Macy’s on Thursday when a woman suddenly stabbed her from behind, according to police.
It happened at the department store in Herald Square just before 3 p.m.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the 38-year-old victim and her partner are both LASD employees.
The suspect allegedly stabbed the tourist in her back and arm from behind before her husband disarmed the suspect and held her until police arrived.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where she’s listed in stable condition. The baby was uninjured.
Meantime, the suspect, who’s been identified as 43-year-old Kerri Aherne of Massachusetts, has been charged with two counts of assault, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said Aherne is currently homeless and has no prior arrests.
A Macy’s spokesperson released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place today as the safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority. We kindly defer any further questions to the local authorities.”
Police said the attack appears to be unprovoked and is currently under investigation.
