SAN PEDRO, Calif. () — The Los Angeles Police Department has released new body camera video showing officers struggling with a man before fatally shooting him on New Year’s Eve in San Pedro.
The video was posted on LAPD’s YouTube channel.
Police were called to a home in the 500 block of West 37th Street for a report of a person violating a restraining order.
“Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who advised the officers that the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Lawrence Gonzales, was inside her apartment,” said LAPD in a statement.
“The officers contacted Gonzales inside the apartment, and he refused to comply with the officers’ command to turn around and place his hands behind his back.”
According to the video, officers attempted to detain the man and soon became engaged in a physical struggle.
Police said Gonzales attempted to disarm the officers, resulting in the shooting.
The bodyworn camera footage goes dark during the confrontation, but officers can be heard shouting moments before shots are fired.
Gonzales was sent to a local hospital where he later died.
Police also released images showing injuries to the officers involved, which the department described as affecting their heads, arms and hands.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
