Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband, Christopher Guest, are grieving the loss of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
“Christopher and I are numb and sad and shocked about the violent, tragic deaths of our dear friends Rob and Michele Singer Reiner and our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them,” Curtis, 67, said in a statement to Us Weekly on Monday, December 15.
The statement continued, “There will be plenty of time later to discuss the creative lives we shared a the great political and social impact they both had on the entertainment industry, early childhood development, the fight for gay marriage and their global care for a world in crisis. We have lost great friends. Please give us time to grieve.”
Guest, 77, cowrote and starred in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which marked Rob’s directorial debut. The two collaborated on the sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released in September. Guest also starred in some of Rob’s other films, including 1987’s The Princess Bride and 1992’s A Few Good Men. Curtis, for her part, shared the screen with Reiner as Joan and Bob, the parents of Zooey Deschanel‘s character, Jess, on New Girl.
Rob and Michele were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on Sunday, December 14, with “apparent stab wounds,” per the LAPD. Rob was 78 and Michele was 68.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesman told Variety in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
During a press conference held on Sunday by Deputy Chief Alan S. Hamilton, it was announced the LAPD was investigating their deaths as homicide. Us Weekly confirmed on Monday, December 15, that Rob and Michele’s son Nick Reiner was arrested on a murder charge. According to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department records viewed by Us, Nick, 32, is currently being held without bail.
In addition to Nick, Rob and Michele also shared son Jake, 34, and daughter Romy, 28. (Rob was also a father of a daughter named Tracy, whom he adopted during his marriage to first wife Penny Marshall.)
Following news of Rob and Michele’s devastating deaths, Tracy, 61, broke her silence.
“I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News on Sunday. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
Several of Rob’s collaborators and Hollywood friends took to social media to share tributes.
“What a huge loss. Rob Reiner was one of my favorite directors. He made some of the most formative movies for my generation,” Ben Stiller wrote in a tribute via X on Monday. “He came out form [SIC] behind a huge comedic shadow of the great Carl Reiner and being a tv actor to being a a great director who made an incredible run of movies. Spinal Tap is one of the best comedies ever made – and the list goes on. He was a kind caring person who was really really funny. I didn’t know him well but was always a fan and I feel a real sadness for those who did, and his family.”
Stephen King mourned the filmmaker in a post shared via X on Monday, writing, “I’m horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele. Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me.”
