Italian exchange student tricked into eating at Olive Garden — and his astonishing reaction has gone viral: ‘Rhonda, why?’

Talk about culture shock.

An adorable Italian exchange student has become a social media star after his American host mom dragged him to Olive Garden — a carb-heavy field trip that had the unsuspecting visitor all but yelling basta! before even making it to the table.

In a string of hilarious and now-viral clips, viewers can see young Alessandro’s enthusiastic guardian, Rhonda, springing the surprise outing to the culinarily controversial Italian-American chain restaurant on the poor kid, like she’s taking him to a five-star trattoria.

“Today’s your lucky day!” Rhonda chirps, while trying to coax her visibly reluctant charge from the car.

Seeing what he’s in for, the suspicious student pleads instead for a trip to McDonald’s — insisting that a Golden Arches visit would be less offensive to his homeland’s culinary honor.

“Rhonda, why?” Alessandro pleaded, his distaste eventually giving way to radical acceptance of the situation.

“Mamma mia,” he said, realizing he was now pasta the point of no return. “I have to be mentally prepared for this. This is something against my will. Just so you know.”

The unlimited soup and salad saga unfolded on TikTok, where both Alessandro and Rhonda posted clips from their Olive Garden adventure, offering dueling perspectives on the popular eatery and garnering tens of millions of views.

The showdown quickly racked up laughs online, as viewers relished the clash between authentic Italian sensibilities and America’s best-known address for breadstick baskets.

Commenters were quick to weigh in on the deliciously funny international incident.

“Italian here … I would settle for a gas station hot dog before Olive Garden,” one wrote.

Someone else joked that Alessandro was definitely ” “he’s “regretting this whole exchange thing,” while another summed the experience up as “an Italian’s biggest nightmare.”

Others simply enjoyed the young man’s running commentary throughout the experience.

“LMAO he is so funny,” one viewer wrote, while another quoted his desperate plea: “The “no let’s go to McDonald’s!” Took me out!!”

One fellow paesan added, “I feel that “no” deep in my Italian soul!” And another European chimed in: “I can relate to this in so many levels.”

Eventually, Alessandro warms to the situation — and can be seen dipping breadsticks into Alfredo sauce.

Shockingly, he pronounced the taste combination “good” — but rushed to admit that he felt as if he was “betraying” his homeland.

He even confessed to enjoying the fried mozzarella and calamari — finally apologizing to his American host parents for having no faith in Olive Garden.

The viral moment is the latest entry in a popular social media genre where Europeans react with horror — or hilarity — to American takes on their native cuisines.

As previously reported by The Post, a recent poll of tourism experts suggests Americans don’t exactly win any popularity contests abroad — especially with the Italians.

According to the survey, Italians often see U.S. travelers as “rude” and “entitled” — though, of course, there’s some nuance.

On the flip side, some guides gave Americans props for being generous tippers and genuinely appreciating Italy’s food, wine, and culture.
