Shaun Cassidy calls himself a storyteller; it’s been his life behind-the-scenes in television for years. But his first job, in high school, turned him into something else first: a “teen idol.”
Now, Cassidy is using his storytelling skills and his musical talent for his first concert tour in decades: “The Road To Us.”
Cassidy signed a record contract while he still was in high school and a star was born. His single “Da Doo Ron Ron,” went to No. 1 on the charts. Soon after, he had another hit with “That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
As a full-fledged teen idol, there was a Shaun Cassidy doll, Halloween costumes to dress up as Cassidy , even rings with his likeness.
Since his half-brother David Cassidy had already been a teen idol, Shaun understood what it was all about.
“I didn’t have any expectations of that being my career,” Shaun said in an interview with 7. “I just thought, ‘Oh, you won this weird lottery and you’ll decide what you really want to do for a living when it dissipates.'”
Along with his first solo album in 1977, Cassidy also starring on television in “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries.”
As time passed, he took his career in a different direction. He created the series, “American Gothic” and more recently, he was executive producer and writer on “New Amsterdam.” He just turned in a new pilot we may be seeing soon.
“That’s been my job for, like, 30 years–writing and producing TV,” Cassidy said.
Now, he’s created something new for himself–a concert tour that started in his head as something else. “I thought I’d do a one-man storytelling show and people, when I told them I had come up with this brilliant idea, they said, ‘No no no! People are going to throw furniture at you if you don’t sing songs that they know.'”
He found a way by mixing his hit songs with new songs and even a singing song his famous mother, Shirley Jones, did in “The Music Man.” During the show, he also shares stories and his life and stories about his family. “I didn’t sing every night for 40 years so my voice is really strong and I’m really grateful for that because you get in your sixties and you don’t know where your voice is going to be anymore,” Cassidy said.
He is bringing his “The Road To Us” tour to three southern California venues. He’s in Palm Springs January 3rd, Riverside on January 17th and he closes out the tour in La Mirada on March 20th. For more details on his shows, go to his website, shauncassidy.com .
And if you go to his concert, you’ll get Cassidy’s classic hits but with a twist. “They’re blanketed by stories that feel authentic to me now so it doesn’t feel purely like a nostalgia experience,” Cassidy said.
I wondered if it could be called a live memoir. “It’s kind of a live memoir. True story,” he said.
Cassidy told me he now plans to write his memoir. He’s also got an idea for a Broadway musical.
