European soccer’s governing body flips sport upside down with boycott of FIFA, future World Cups

The 2030 World Cup may be missing many of soccer’s global powerhouses, with UEFA’s announcement that it will be boycotting FIFA.

FIFA, the sport’s global governing body, recently published proposed details of a company titled FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) that would allow private investors to buy shares in the World Cup. FFE is being formed to run the governing body’s commercial rights and event operations, and the infusion of private capital into FIFA and all of its competitions, including the World Cup. This would not be in the sport’s best interest according to UEFA, European soccer’s 55-member governing body.

UEFA released a statement on Thursday bluntly explaining that its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions.

The decision comes on the heels of FIFA sending letters or proposals to its 211 member nations with a deadline of Sept. 19 for member associations to get on board, with 75% support needed to change bylaws. FIFA states that it would remain a not-for-profit organization – as it is recognized in Switzerland – while FFE would be a controlled commercial subsidiary.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino explained that private capital infusion would see members receive $10 billion in total funds, which equates to approximately $40 million per association. Infantino is also promising smaller federations would see development payouts go from $8 million to $20 million through 2030.

UEFA and its 55 member associations “unanimously and unequivocally reject” FIFA’s proposal.

“The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football’s greatest sporting legacies,” UEFA’s statement read. “It has been built over generations by players, national teams and supporters across every continent. No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.

“It is both irresponsible and indefensible that a proposal of such significance for football was conceived in secret and brought to the brink of approval without any meaningful consultation with those entrusted with stewarding the game. This is not merely a profound failure of leadership, but an abdication of FIFA’s duty as the custodian of world football.”

Furthermore, UEFA’s statement explained that the game of soccer is not for sale.

“Europe’s position is clear. We will never lend this model our legitimacy. No one has the moral authority to sell what they merely hold in trust for the next generation,” the statement continued.

“As a result of today’s discussion, no UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.

“Nobody should be in any doubt: UEFA and its national associations will oppose these plans with absolute determination.”

When reached for comment by Fox News Digital about the development of FFE and reports of UEFA’s boycott of FIFA, the organization shared the FAQ section of the FIFA Forward Enterprise published on its official website.

This boycott flips the global game upside down.

Both the men’s and women’s World Cup would take place without European national teams, including the likes of England, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium. The European Championships and Champions League, both controlled by UEFA, would continue to take place.

According to the New York Post, Thrive Eternal is expected to lead the investor group if the FFE proposal is passed and take on up to a 20% stake for more than $4.2 billion. Thrive is an American venture capital firm founded by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Joshua Kushner.

The men’s 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. The 2027 Women’s World Cup will take place in Brazil.
