Coyote euthanized after attacking 2 children in Carson, officials say

CARSON, Calif. () — The coyote that attacked a 4-year-old boy who was standing in his grandmother’s Carson driveway has been euthanized, wildlife officials confirmed.

The attack happened Tuesday while the child was near his mother’s car. Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing the boy being grabbed and pulled to the ground by the coyote as his mother unloaded supplies from the vehicle.

The child, Solomon, who turned 4 in February, was not seriously injured. He was treated for superficial puncture wounds on one of his legs and on his torso.

DNA testing linked the coyote to another incident in Carson that took place back in February, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The incident on Feb. 11 also involved a child.

“CDFW took efforts to trap and capture the coyote following the original attack and have now partnered with the USDA on additional ongoing trapping and capture efforts,” Fish and Wildlife said in a statement.

Wildlife officials confirmed the same coyote was responsible for the attack this week, and the animal was humanely euthanized on Thursday.

That same day, two additional coyote attacks were reported. On March 26, a 31-year-old woman in Gardena was attacked, and a young child was attacked March 30 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. DNA samples were taken from both of those victims.

“It’s currently believed that the coyote responsible for the March 31 and February 11 attacks could be responsible for at least one of these additional reported attacks,” officials.

Officials say the coyote may have been drawn into the populated areas by the smell of food waste, unsecured trash cans or pet food that is left outside.

Fish and wildlife officials added they have partnered with the USDA for additional ongoing trapping and capture efforts.
