Community mourns 14-year-old football player killed in Hesperia shooting

HESPERIA, Calif. () — Hundreds gathered in Hesperia Monday night for an emotional candlelight vigil honoring a talented young football player who was killed in a shooting that shocked those who knew and loved him.

Friends, teammates and coaches described 14-year-old Jeremy “Tank” Rosales as a dedicated athlete and loyal friend whose talent and character left a lasting impression.

“That was like my brother, not by blood but by love,” teammate Gavin Hernandez said. “I’ve known him since I was like 9, 10 years old… went to championship together, got a ring together, went to nationals.”

Last Friday, the 14-year-old was gunned down at Mojave Vista Park, a short distance from his family’s home.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting. No information has been released about potential suspects.

Rosales, affectionately known as “Tank” for his size and strength, was a straight A student at Oak Hills High School.

“We would always be at practice together… doing our reps together. He was my partner for everything,” said teammate Jacob Chavez.

Many of those attending the vigil got to know Tank while he trained at Team Elite Sports Academy, a program aimed at keeping kids off the streets. During his time there, he helped his team win nationals.

“Tank is Tank,” said Dominic Monica, a line coach. “He carried that name because of the things he does out on the field. He’s just a great kid.”

During the vigil, mourners released balloons into the night sky as his family watched. Rosales’ sister spoke through tears, describing the pain of losing him.

“My brother Jeremy is our everything… he’s number 32 on the field but he’s number one in our hearts forever,” she said.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
