Rob Reiner was honored during a live telecast of the 2026 Critics Choice Awards.
As Hollywood’s biggest stars attended the annual event at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 4, host Chelsea Handler took time during her opening monologue to honor Rob and his late wife, Michele Singer Reiner. Handler, 50, began her tribute to the Reiners after calling Adam Sandler “the nicest guy in Hollywood.”
“Actually, you’re the second nicest guy in Hollywood,” Handler said. “Because everyone in this room knows that the nicest guy in Hollywood was Rob Reiner. Anyone who ever spent time with Rob Reiner knows the minute that you met him, he felt like an old friend. When you were in a conversation with him, he was present, he was focused and he was funny, and he would ask you tons of questions. Whether you were discussing politics or film or the latest beauty trends, he was all in.”
The comedian went on to share a personal memory of Rob and Michele, noting that she’d seen them last year before their deaths.
“After I sent him a text thanking him for dinner a few months ago, he sent me a text back that said, ‘We had so much fun with you last night. Thanks for explaining so much about plastic surgery, it was very edifying,’” Handler recalled. “Rob and Michele were tireless in their efforts to [support] so many important causes, all stemming from one basic idea: decency. That we should all look out for each other. And I think we can all agree that we definitely need more of that. So, let’s use tonight as a reminder of that decency and as a reminder of everything Rob and Michele represented and fought so hard for.”

The tribute comes just three weeks after Rob and Michele were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14, 2025.
One day later, Us confirmed that Rob and Michele’s son Nick Reiner was arrested in connection with his parents’ deaths. He has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Nick has not entered a plea, but has hired powerhouse attorney Alan Jackson (who previously defended Karen Read) to represent him. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, January 7.

“This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” Jackson told reporters in December. “We all recognized that our hearts go out to the entire Reiner family. There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. Those need to be thoroughly, but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed.”
As Nick’s legal case continues, many in and around Hollywood continue to celebrate Rob and Michele’s lives.

After landing the role of Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the 1970s sitcom All in the Family, Rob went on to become one of the most notable directors in Hollywood. His projects included The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men.
As for Michele, she was an established photographer who also worked as an actress and producer.
Michele and Rob married in 1989 and went on to welcome kids Jake, Nick and Romy Reiner. Rob was also a father to Tracy Reiner, whom he adopted during his first marriage to Penny Marshall.
“They were in the best place in their lives: loving one another, loving their friends, their family, their country,” close friend Maria Shriver wrote via Instagram on December 15. “They loved their kids so much, and they never stopped trying to be really good parents. My love is with their family. I’m so sad for them. I’m devastated, gutted, shocked, stunned, and so deeply saddened, as are all of the people who loved them and who they loved.”

Billy Crystal joined other close Hollywood friends in honoring Rob and Michele with a personal statement of their own.
While the tribute recognized Rob’s accomplishments on the big screen, the statement also praised the director and Michele’s accomplishments as a duo.
“Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better and with his loving wife, Michele, he had the perfect partner,” the statement via the Associated Press stated. “Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens. … They were a special force together — dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”
