Catherine O’Hara Was Hopeful About ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Revival Before Her Death at 71

Catherine O’Hara remained hopeful about reuniting with her Schitt’s Creek costars on screen before her death.

O’Hara, who played Moira Rose on the hit sitcom, was asked about a potential revival in a 2024 People interview, to which she replied, “I would love to [do it]. We did a bit of a tour after we finished the show, and it was so much fun.”

The actress said she wanted to work with Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Annie Murphy and more.

“I’d love to just be with them all again,” she added at the time. “Doing a movie would be wonderful. Yeah, I hope it happens.”

While reflecting on the show’s success, O’Hara praised creators and stars Dan, 42, and Eugene, 79, for “giving me that role, or giving me that opportunity to develop the role with them and to collaborate.”

“It’s such a gift to work with people with whom you can collaborate. And they wrote such great scripts, and it was just so fun and so lovely,” she gushed. “And really, I hate to say COVID was good for anything, but we really lucked out with Netflix showing the show. Then so many families being holed up, parents and adult children being holed up under the same roof.”

O’Hara concluded: “So many people were going through that. So it turned out that [it was] just the timing. … You can’t predict these things. It was the scripts, the idea of working with Eugene and Daniel, and then to have such a lovely experience with all of them.”

Schitt’s Creek, which premiered in 2015, had a six-season run as viewers tuned in to watch the wealthy Rose family start over in a rural town after their lives were uprooted when they were defrauded by their business manager.

O’Hara won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role as the matriarch. Following the 2020 series finale, Dan remained hesitant about immediately bringing Schitt’s Creek back to life as cast members went their separate ways with new projects.

Simply the best! After the hit show’s iconic television run, the potential for a Schitt’s Creek movie looks brighter than ever. The series originally ran for six seasons starting in 2015, and its finale aired in April 2020. The show was created by father-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, and it slowly rose to […]

“It’s very flattering that people want to know, but I would just say generally I think you need to let the good things settle for a minute. Let people finish the show,” he told E! News in 2020. “Let people sort of take a breath. And then if people are still interested and an idea comes to me and our cast is wanting to do it, then great.”

Dan later made it clear that everyone still keeps in touch.

“I see these people all the time. We’re in constant contact with each other,” he told People at the time. “So the love is there. The desire to work together is there, and the desire to tell more stories is there.”

He continued: “I think it just comes down to making sure that it’s the right story to tell. And I think we’re also proud of the work we did on Schitt’s. And when you end on such a high, it really forces you to think very carefully about what the next step is. Because whatever that is, is an extension of something that most people don’t have, don’t get to see in their life. And I really respect the audience in that thing.”

O’Hara died on Friday, January 30, after battling a “brief illness,” Creative Artists Agency confirmed to Us Weekly. The Home Alone star was 71.
