Beloved Big Bear bald eagles Jackie and Shadow lose both eggs after ravens invade nest

BIG BEAR, Calif. () — The nest of Big Bear’s beloved bald eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow, was invaded while the eagles were away on Friday, breaching both of their freshly-laid eggs.

Around 3:30 p.m., a raven landed in the nest and pecked the eggs, video from the live nest camera shows.

Jackie and Shadow were not in the nest at the time.

According to the non-profit, Friends of Big Bear Valley, which owns and operates the camera, Shadow left the nest around noon, and Jackie did not come in, leaving it unattended for several hours. At that point, the non-profit noticed that one of the eggs looked like it had broken.

“We will never know why, but we are sure they had their reasons as they have been incubating the eggs faithfully,” the non-profit said in a post on social media. “It is possible Jackie and Shadow sensed something was wrong with the egg. They could have also been protecting their territory as many other bald eagles have been seen in the valley recently.”

It was later Friday afternoon when ravens came to the nest and breached both eggs, the non-profit said. Jackie later returned and continued to incubate one of the breached eggs.

Now, fans of the beloved bald eagles will have to wait to see if Jackie lays a second clutch of eggs.

“There is a possibility Jackie might lay a 2nd clutch of eggs since these were lost early on and we are still early in the season, but there is no guarantee. Jackie and Shadow will need to move on from incubating first. It generally takes a month for a female’s body to recover and be ready to lay eggs again,” the non-profit wrote.

The pair have raised several eaglets in the past, including Sunny and Gizmo last year.
