BALDWIN HILLS, LOS ANGELES () — For decades the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza has been a site of historical and cultural significance for this community and now with a new groundbreaking, developers hope that the it continues to serve as a cornerstone.
“Developments like this signal that south Los Angeles is a place where investment is happening,” said David Schwartzman, the president and CEO of Harridge Developement Group. “Where opportunity is growing, and where the future of our city is being built.”
The former Sears building will be demolished and 92 new residential homes will take its place as part of phase one of the redevelopment of the site.
“It means a lot to me because we don’t have this in our community — good stores, good housing,” said Sherry Bailey, a long-time Windsor Hills resident.” I have adults, young adults, who would love to be able to get into housing once this is built.”
Developers say this project is about opportunity and creating a pathway to home ownership in Los Angeles, which they acknowledged has become increasingly difficult. They say eventually there will be 551 new homes for sale for the community.
“I remember when we used to have Carl’s Toys and Hobbies in this area along with Broadway and all those old school stores,” said Robert Biggs, the president of Consolidated Board of Realtists. “To see a transition into something like this is gonna be a wonderful situation.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, other city officials and developers of the project were present at the ceremony to speak about what the project will mean for locals.
“We know that this is more than retail,” said Bass. “It’s about investing in the historic commercial corridor, and it’s about creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses hundreds of construction jobs will be created as well as permanent jobs through retail and commercial uses.”
Organizers say construction activities are expected to begin immediately. They estimate the project will take about six years.
