Trick or treat yourself in the bedroom?
October has us queuing up Halloween movies galore. As you’re cuddling up under the covers to watch “Scream” or “Get Out,” consider this: do the scary skeletons and ghouls have you suddenly feeling…sexual?
Surprised? So was I. But the sensation is actually normal, per certified sex therapist Brianna Makówka, as the body-brain connection is stronger than you think.
“The same nervous system pathway responsible for increased adrenaline, a racing heart, and dilated pupils is linked to the arousal-processing region in the brain that registers a threat response and the release of dopamine and norepinephrine,” she explained. “In essence, fear and sexual arousal can feel like the exact same body sensation.”
Horror movies, in particular, trigger an excitatory arousal response, per Makówka.
“We experience changes in our bodies like shallow breathing, bracing in anticipation, and unexpectedly, we might feel turned on in the same moment,” she continued. “This is also why some people can enjoy, and find arousal in, the intense sensations derived from a kink or BDSM scene.”
