Long Beach braces for possible record high tides this week; coastal flood advisory in effect through Thursday

LONG BEACH, Calif. () — Parts of the Southern California coast will see possible record high tides, concerns are growing for beachfront homes on the Long Beach Peninsula, which has already been battered over the last few months.

A coastal flood advisory went into effect Sunday morning as city crews continue to fortify sand berms in an effort to protect homes along the shoreline. Several homes have been red-tagged in recent weeks due to flooding and damage caused by high surf and high tide conditions.

Long Beach homeowners along the peninsula are continuing to assess damage and reinforce their properties as strong surf continues threatening homes.

High tides between 7.5 and 8 feet are expected during the morning hours through Thursday over all coastal areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said Monday through Wednesday’s tides could challenge the current record of 7.93 feet set in San Pedro on Jan. 10, 2005. Records go back to 1924.

The coastal flood advisory runs from 5 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Thursday, and applies to Los Angeles and Ventura County beaches, as well as the Malibu coast.

“Minor coastal flooding is likely purely based on the high tides. While these tides might be the highest of all-time, similar extreme tides in the past tell us that coastal communities should expect shallow flooding of harbor walkways, beach parking lots and bike paths,” the NWS said.

Areas of Long Beach, Malibu and Newport Beach have already seen substantial damage to homes from high surf in recent weeks.

The weather service said there was a moderate rip current risk during the advisory period.

Erosion is also another serious issue along the coast. The city has ramped up a major dredging operation, bringing in more than 400,000 cubic yards of sand from Alamitos Bay in an effort to restore what was once a large beach area.

“I’ve been down here since 2001. I’ve never seen it this bad,” said Larry Manzo of Long Beach. “It’s really sad to see the neighbors deal with this.”

Over in Orange County, beaches are under a coastal flood warning with high tide also expected to reach at least 7 feet.

City News Service contributed to this report.
