Beloved UES hot spot closing after 42 years — and locals are fuming about what might replace it

The Upper East Side is in mourning.

After months of will-they-won’t-they speculation, a neighborhood petition, and one seemingly miraculous reprieve, Mezzaluna, the beloved Italian trattoria that has held court on Third Avenue for more than four decades, is finally closing its doors.

Its departure comes after the owners opted against a new 10-year lease and marks another loss for the old Upper East Side, as neighborhood haunts increasingly give way to luxury condos, trendy coffee chains, and a streetscape that longtime residents barely recognize.

“It’s so depressing. I was there yesterday,” said Genny Eide, 33, who grew up on the Upper East Side and has been eating at the restaurant since childhood. “They were selling plates. I bought one.”

When she asked the staff if it was really the end, they told her it was “real this time,” as the beloved neighborhood staple will officially turn its last key on Sunday, November 1, at 8 p.m., after 42 years.

For Eide, who now brings her own children to the restaurant, life without Mezzaluna is hard to imagine.

“My mom orders the Pollanca every day, no corn, no tomatoes,” she said of the salad that has earned unmistakable street credit. “She says she doesn’t know where she’s gonna eat anymore.”

For generations of Upper East Siders, Mezzaluna was less a restaurant than a second home.

Having grown up across the street, I can confidently say I’ve eaten there more than at any other restaurant in my life— even when delivery apps made virtually any cuisine available at my doorstep. Proximity helped, sure. But it’s the kind of place you can eat four days in a row without questioning your sanity.

For founder Aldo Bozzi, 86, the decision to close is bittersweet.

The restaurant was originally scheduled to shut its doors in March, but an extraordinary show of neighborhood support prompted him to ask his landlord for an extension.

When rumors of the potential closure first circulated earlier this year, a wave of dismay swept through the streets of Lenox Hill, and more than 2,100 patrons signed a Change.org petition to save the restaurant.

A popular Instagram @MadisonAvenueSpy effectively described the news as “The UES is crashing as rumors of Mezzaluna closing circulate,” with “Literally three generations of customers losing it in my DMs.”

“The response of people was like a tsunami,” Bozzi told The Post, describing lines wrapping around 75th Street, with some customers waiting three hours for a table and a chance to say goodbye.

Ultimately, staying at 1295 Third Avenue would have meant signing another 10-year lease and undertaking extensive — and expensive — renovations, including overhauling the restaurant’s famously tiny kitchen.

That project could shutter it for months, Bozzi said, piling up renovation costs while cutting off its revenue.

“I’m not a young chicken any longer,” he joked. “I’m 86. I wish I was 76. I would have more energy.”

Mezzaluna closing is yet another blow for real neighborhood restaurants in the Upper East Side, as the last of the true local institutions are being replaced with new developments and the proliferation of chain coffee shops like Blank Street—which has 3 locations in just a few surrounding square blocks.

At one point, it was rumored that Chipotle might take over the decades-old establishment’s space, as the surrounding stretch of Third Avenue continues to transform.

Mezzaluna is a microcosm of the Upper East Side—a melting pot of generations.

It’s the unofficial private school students’ after-school meeting ground, but also a place where they could go with grandma for dinner, or overhear gossip from their parents’ friends at a table, nearly on top of theirs.

It’s almost comically tiny, and packed at any moment of the day— a substantial accomplishment for a restaurant that serves wine, but no hard liquor

It was as much a social destination as a place to eat, without the pretension of other Upper East Side dining rooms where securing a table can feel like a social experiment.

And the food was consistently good, with generous portions and prices that didn’t require a second mortgage.

“Mezzaluna was freedom,” long-time patron and Manhattan native Erica Moser told The Post. “Unlimited iced tea, lunching with girlfriends before we knew lunching was a verb, and we were old enough to watch Sex and the City,” she reminisced. “We were able to be social and independent while being home before 8:00 p.m.”

In 2008, I could spend an entire weekend afternoon on that corner, as rotating casts of neighborhood characters filled and emptied the tables and sidewalk. There was hardly a better place to run into everyone you knew without actually making plans.

“For as long as I can remember, Mezzaluna has been part of our everyday lives,” said Alexa Eshagian, 31, who grew up in the neighborhood. “From sitting there in a high chair, to after school with friends, weekends with family, countless lunches that never required deciding where to go.”

Even after moving to Miami, Eshagian said, it remained her first stop whenever she returned to New York.

“It’s rare for a restaurant to become such a meaningful part of a family’s history, and even harder to imagine the neighborhood without it.”

But Mezzaluna wasn’t always just a neighborhood fixture. When Bozzi opened the restaurant in 1984, he helped revolutionize Italian dining in New York.

He imported artisanal pasta from Gragnano, near Naples, and olive oil from his family’s Tuscan estate, home to 800 olive trees, despite skeptics who doubted Americans would notice the difference.

“I said absolutely not. They recognize quality. They understand when it’s good,” Bozzi recalled.

And much of his original vision remained intact, from the terracotta floors and wood-fired pizza oven to the dozens of framed Italian artworks lining the walls.

“I think this is the reason we were there for 42 years,” Bozzi said, reflecting on how his little restaurant had “started a revolution.”

“Some Mezzaluna staff have been there for over 40 years,” Roberto Manfe, the restaurant’s general manager, told The Post.

Which makes the closure even heavier. In recent years, the Upper East Side has said goodbye to family-owned institutions like Donohue’s and Neary’s—places where menus rarely changed and staff were central to the restaurants’ identities.

Though Bozzi now lives full-time in Southampton, he hasn’t ruled out another incarnation of Mezzaluna. He and his daughter discussed finding another space, ideally on a corner with outdoor seating, but there are no imminent plans.

“Let’s not say goodbye,” he said. “Let’s say arrivederci. That’s a big difference. We can see each other maybe soon. Who knows?”
