It is a truth universally acknowledged that when a movie hits theaters, a themed popcorn bucket follows.
The Jane Austen classic “Sense and Sensibility” is no exception.
The story of two willful — and suddenly poor — sisters hits big screens on October 16 with a new adaptation starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Caitríona Balfe. To celebrate, Focus Features is dropping a novelty popcorn bucket that looks like a stack of antique Jane Austen books.
The popcorn tin has a lid that looks like a vintage library cover page. On the inside, it’s stamped with Jane Austen’s own signature. Reports put the price between $25 and $45, though no official link to purchase is available in the US yet.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped online Austen fans from delighting in the drop — and debating whether a goofy snack box helps or hurts the historic author’s legacy.
Commenters popped off on Reddit, where a thread on the new bucket sparked both pride and prejudice.
Many lit lovers were on the same page about the Austen homage — they loved it.
“This popcorn bucket looks really cool and looks like something you’re able to easily reuse,” wrote one fan.
“Just take my money now!” declared another.
“I need this ASAP,” insisted an Austen enthusiast on Instagram.
But some questioned whether a novelty snack tin was respectful to Austen, who was one of the first female authors to achieve success in her lifetime. She earned about 700 pounds — the modern equivalent of $160,000 — from her work.
“Imagine what Jane Austen would think seeing this,” wrote one lit lover.
“This is where I draw the line,” grumbled another.
And then there were the Debbie Downers — or as Austen may have called them, the Desolate Deborahs.
“Waste of plastic like all the other stupid popcorn buckets that will end up in landfills. Cardboard buckets hold popcorn just fine,” declared a dissenter.
“We should have been shaming bucketheads from the beginning,” whined a response.
So far, almost 25,000 fans on Instagram’s official “Sense and Sensibility Page” disagree.
“Sense and Sensibility” is Jane Austen’s first released novel. It follows the spirited but bank-busted Dashwood sisters as they chase in 1811. Her most famous work, “Pride and Prejudice,” came two years later, followed by “Emma” — which served as the inspiration for the 1995 teen hit “Clueless” — in 1815.
This is Hollywood’s second big-screen adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility.” The first, written by Emma Thompson and directed by Ang Lee, hit cinemas in 1995 to critical acclaim.
That version scored Thompson a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar — but it never got a popcorn bucket.
