Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on October 5, 2026, closing a case that drew national attention after prosecutors revealed the former music pastor killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, as she slept and while carrying on an affair with a young church intern — then tried to use his own daughters to cover it up.
The sentencing capped a trial that laid bare how Caleb staged a home invasion, lied to investigators and coached his two young daughters — who were mere feet away during the killing — to repeat his story. Despite maintaining his innocence, a jury rejected his version of events on September 29, 2026, finding him guilty of murder.
Caleb Flynn Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Ashley Flynn’s Murder
Caleb broke down in tears as the sentence was handed down, apologizing to his family even as he continued to deny killing his wife.
“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed in those vows,” he said, according to the Associated Press. “I cannot apologize enough.” Moments later, he told the court, “As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife.”
The former music pastor in Ohio did not testify in his own defense during the trial.
Prosecutors told jurors that Caleb shot Ashley in February 2026 and then staged a break-in to make it appear she had been killed by a burglar. The couple’s two daughters were home with their father when police arrived at the scene. In closing arguments, prosecutors argued Caleb wanted out of his marriage — and chose murder as his exit.
Inside Caleb Flynn’s Affair With Church Intern Alleigha Botner
Central to the state’s case was Caleb’s relationship with Alleigha Botner, a former intern at the church where he served as pastor. Botner testified as a key witness and told jurors she met Caleb in 2022, when she was 20 years old, and that their affair lasted more than a year. She told the court Caleb said he hated his wife and thought about killing her on several occasions.
Prosecutors also played AI-generated love songs for the jury that they said Caleb created for Botner during the affair. The night before Ashley was killed, Caleb allegedly sent Botner a text message that read, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”
How Caleb Flynn’s Daughters Were Pulled Into the Cover-Up
In a sentencing memorandum obtained by People, prosecutors wrote that Caleb told his two daughters — ages 9 and 11 at the time of the February murder — to lie to investigators about what happened. Both girls told authorities their father warned them that “their statements could be the difference between life and death for him.” He also instructed them to “deny that he had coached them and conceal the conversations from others.”
“Thus, after taking their mother from them, [Caleb] attempted to use his grieving daughters to reinforce the story he had created to protect himself,” prosecutors wrote. The girls ultimately told the truth. Both testified during the trial, and family members read their victim impact statements aloud at the sentencing hearing in their absence.
Caleb cried uncontrollably as his youngest daughter’s statement was read by her uncle. She described her mother as having “a voice of an angel” and wrote, “She was my best friend. And then you chose to kill the only mother I ever had.” She also asked her father, “What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?”
The eldest daughter’s statement, read by her maternal grandmother, was equally direct.
Former American Idol contestant Caleb C. Flynn is now facing additional charges in connection with the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, that happened in February. Ashley was found dead inside of their Tipp City, Ohio, home after Caleb, 39, initially claimed there was a break-in at the residence in the early hours of February […]
“Did you ever think about how much pain you would bring your own two daughters?” she wrote. “By the way, Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to you. You decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age.” She ended with a final message to her father: “And by the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.”
Breaking Down Caleb Flynn’s ‘American Idol’ Past
Caleb appeared on season 12 of American Idol in 2013. He advanced through several rounds of the competition but was eliminated before the live rounds began. During his time on the show, he spoke openly about his faith and his marriage, crediting Ashley with pushing him to pursue his singing career.
“I absolutely love the Lord. I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty. Just… oof, I love her,” Caleb said during his audition, according to Biography.com. “But, you know, I’m just a normal person who absolutely loves to sing more than anything in the world, and I think I have a different sound to my voice.”
