ONTARIO, Calif. () — Employees at Alebrijes Bakery spent Mexican Independence Day preparing the business’ signature pan dulce while also repairing damage caused by a break-in the night before.
Co-owner Moises Rosales said the incident was disappointing for a business that works to support its community.
“We do everything we can to support the community we are in,” Rosales said. “So it was just kind of bummed that they had to do that.”
According to Rosales, surveillance video showed a thief rummaging through the bakery’s cash drawer. The bakery lost money, and its back door was damaged during the break-in.
“They opened one of two doors; they open one door, they jammed it up, and the other door, they folded it in half. They broke all the hardware, and then they broke in, and they were here for like about 30 seconds,” Rosales said. “And they walked out.”
Despite the break-in, the bakery continued preparations for the holiday. Rosales said the damage delayed operations and caused staff to start work late, but they finished in time to open.
“I told the guys we have to start working. We have to keep moving,” Rosales said.
News of the break-in spread on social media, prompting customers from across the Inland Empire to visit the bakery and show support.
“I saw the update at 4 a.m. when he posted and so I thought today would be a good day to come support the business,” said Ulysses Nera of San Bernardino.
Rosales said he reported the break-in to Ontario police.
“They came and took fingerprints and blood samples because they bled when they opened the door. And honestly, I don’t know if there’s anything that’s going to happen through that. I’m not worried about finding the person and sending them to jail or whatever,” Rosales said. “I just needed to keep working,”
