5 arrested in Anaheim drug bust targeting illegal pills sold at indoor swap meet

ANAHEIM, Calif. () — Five people were arrested after Anaheim police served a search warrant at an indoor swap meet Wednesday morning as part of an investigation into the alleged sale of illegal pills, including sales to minors.

Officers executed search warrants Wednesday at three stores inside the Anaheim Marketplace, a large indoor swap meet, according to Anaheim police. Investigators allege the vendors were selling Farmapram, a foreign brand of alprazolam, the generic form of Xanax, without prescriptions.

Police were seen collecting bottles of Farmapram and placing them into evidence bags after vendors were accused of selling the pills to minors.

“We had our undercover minors go in there and buy them from these businesses. It’s a bad problem,” Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter said.

According to police, a lengthy investigation identified three vendors inside the marketplace who were allegedly selling illegal Xanax pills.

“After a long and lengthy investigation, we found out there was three stores inside, three vendors, selling illegal Xanax pills to anybody for any reason at all with no prescription,” Sutter said.

Investigators said the pills were being brought into Orange County from outside the United States and sold by the bottle.

“There’s ninety in here. They’re selling them for about $150 a bottle,” Sutter said. “So either they’re using them for themselves, which is harmful to their health, or they’re selling it to people in the community, possibly even at schools.”

Police arrested four people at the Anaheim Marketplace whom they say were connected to the alleged operation. Earlier in the day, officers arrested 42-year-old Nilva Cana at her Anaheim home. Investigators suspect Cana owned the three stores and was in charge of the operation.

“We will file the case with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and we’re hoping they throw the full weight of the justice system at them, because this is terrible for our community,” Sutter said.

Police said it remains unclear whether the pills seized during the operation were laced with any other illicit substances, such as fentanyl. Investigators said that determination will be part of the continuing investigation.
