LOS ANGELES () — A brush fire burning on a hillside along the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center scorched approximately 25 acres Wednesday and prompted evacuation warnings before firefighters stopped its forward progress.
The Getty Fire was reported at about 4:15 p.m. near Getty Center Drive, north of the Getty Center in the Brentwood area. A visible plume of smoke rose over the surrounding area.
Multiple water-dropping helicopters were dispatched to the scene to help douse the flames.
A brush fire was burning along the 405 Freeway near Getty Center Drive in the Sepulveda Pass.
About two hours later, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported that crews had stopped the fire’s forward progress at approximately 25 acres. The blaze was initially reported at 3 acres.
An evacuation warning was issued for an area that encompasses Promontory Road to the north, Sunset Boulevard to the south, the 405 Freeway to the east and Bundy Drive to the west. The warning remained in effect after firefighters halted the fire’s forward progress but was lifted around 8:40 p.m.
The Getty Center was closed due to the fire, according to the museum’s website.
“At this time, Getty has evacuated the Getty Center site for visitors and staff. The collections and art are safe, and we’re working with the fire department on monitoring the situation,” a spokesperson for the museum said.
The museum will remain closed on Thursday.
Despite the firefighters’ response, lanes on the 405 Freeway remained open. By 6 p.m., firefighters appeared to have gained the upper hand on the blaze.
The fire comes as Southern California experiences dangerously hot temperatures.
A cause for the fire remains under investigation.
