Orange County weather and high tides: At least 14 homes damaged by powerful waves in Capistrano Beach in Dana Point

DANA POINT, Calif. () — Several homes along Beach Road in Dana Point’s Capistrano Beach sustained significant damage after powerful waves struck the Orange County coastline, according to local officials and residents.

New video from the area showed damage to multiple oceanfront homes, including decks and portions of structures facing the ocean. The neighborhood is located between Dana Point and San Clemente.

A representative for the Capistrano Bay District told Eyewitness News that at least 14 homes were damaged over the weekend.

Residents described the situation as urgent, expressing concern that damage could worsen if protective measures are not put in place.

Huge swells from high tide continued to pound homes along the coastline on Tuesday. Seven homes were red-tagged and two others were yellow-tagged as damage assessments continued. One home was destroyed.

Workers battled the waves in an effort to shore up damaged structures.

Among those watching the damage was Hall of Famer and former Los Angeles Dodger Adrian Beltré and his family, as the deck of a home they had been remodeling collapsed into the waves.

Residents said they have been warning the California Coastal Commission for years about the vulnerability of the shoreline. They said obtaining permits for preventive measures has been nearly impossible and remains a challenge as they contend with the ongoing damage.

Construction crews were seen in the area throughout the morning on Tuesday clearing debris. District officials said debris poses an additional concern because strong waves could push it into homes, causing further damage.

Residents are urging the city of Dana Point and Orange County officials to pursue an emergency declaration.
