Mystery beach masterpieces appear overnight as California sand wizard unmasked

Massive works of art are appearing in the sand along one Bay Area beach, all created by a single artist who gets to work while most people are going to bed.

Brighton Denevan, 34, starts working on his intricate designs around 11 p.m.

On a recent Tuesday night, Denevan arrived at Keller Beach in Point Richmond with a metal shrub rake in hand and started drawing in the sand, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

He worked until sunrise the next morning, putting the finishing touches on his creation and racing to complete it before high tide washed his work away.

Denevan uses the beach as his canvas and the rake as his paintbrush, creating detailed designs that attract millions of views online, particularly on social media.

Many of his designs feature sayings like, “It’s hard to believe the more friends you have, the better,” spelled out in capital letters alongside abstract flowers. Others form intricate, symmetrical patterns reminiscent of those seen through a kaleidoscope.

“The artwork is like a conversation with the environment,” he told The Chronicle. “It’s affected and it changes based on the conditions.”

Denevan told the paper that, believe it or not, he enjoys having to start over with each piece after the ocean washes his art away.

“It’s fun creating a temporary environment that potentially can affect people and get them excited about what human beings can do,” he said. “We can make these huge designs on the ground and be like a hype man for humanity.”

Denevan is from Santa Cruz and moved to the East Bay in the spring, according to The Chronicle. He spent months looking for the ideal stretch of sand along the bay.

In July, he found his seaside studio at Keller Beach. He told the paper that although the sand isn’t like what he’s used to in Santa Cruz, it still works for him because it doesn’t show his footprints.

Passersby in Point Richmond have definitely noticed Denevan’s work. The Chronicle reported that many stop and stare at the mazelike patterns and popular song lyrics that stretch across the beach, creating massive monochromatic murals in the sand.

“It gives you a real appreciation for where you live because you see it from a different perspective,” Aisling Carroll, who has lived in Point Richmond for more than a decade, told the Chronicle.

Denevan documents his work with drone photography and time-lapse videos, sharing the finished creations with more than 272,000 followers on Instagram.

His elaborate sand art has also caught the attention of celebrities, with Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls and actor Will Smith among those who have given his work online shout-outs, the newspaper reported.

Besides working on beaches, Denevan has also created similar works in snowy Fresno County parking lots. But beaches are his favorite, according to The Chronicle.

He also recently started gaining recognition for wearing a black top hat, while he creates his masterpieces. It’s a gift he received from a Point Richmond resident and avid hat collector Richard Katz.

“I thought it’d be fun to wear a top hat because it’s like a magician-y kind of thing, and I’m kind of doing magic tricks out here,” Denevan told The Chronicle.
