Biggest SoCal restaurant closures of August 2026

Biggest SoCal restaurant closures of August 2026

Southern California’s brutal restaurant shakeout showed no signs of cooling off in August.

A wave of closures swept from Los Angeles down to San Diego throughout August 2026, claiming everything from a decades-old taco institution to a beloved West Hollywood watering hole, some longtime favorites were squeezed out by crippling overhead, shifts in consumer spending and expiring leases.

Here are some of the biggest restaurant and bar closures that hit SoCal in August.

The chain continues to operate San Diego locations in East Village, Liberty Station, Mission Valley, Pacific Beach and others.

The Belmont – West Hollywood

Last call for The Belmont after an epic 26-year run on La Cienega Boulevard. One of the long-running West Hollywood bars and nightclubs, the spot was known for its Sunday karaoke nights, generous pours and an eclectic mix of music, the fan favorite spot shut its doors for good at the end of August. Owner Dylan Leong blamed rising taxes and labor costs, along with what he described to Los Angeles Magazine as a lack of support from the city, for the decision to call it quits. Its departure leaves a major vacancy in WeHo’s fiercely competitive hospitality corridor.

Sky’s Gourmet Tacos – Mid-City

After 34 iconic years serving up legendary Mexican-soul food fusion on Pico Boulevard, founder Barbara Burrell closed Sky’s Gourmet Tacos for good on Aug. 15. Famous for its shrimp tacos and “sassy sauce,” Sky’s succumbed to a brutal mix of skyrocketing rent, dwindling foot traffic, and utility cost spikes. While the physical storefront is gone, the brand is pivoting to catering and ghost kitchen operations to keep the brand alive.

Breakfast Republic – San Diego County

San Diego’s ubiquitous morning eats powerhouse took a step back on Aug. 9, closing its North Park, Ocean Beach and Encinitas. Operator Rise & Shine Hospitality Group attributed the closures to “lease expirations and strategic portfolio decisions,” trimming the portfolio and focusing on its remaining high-performing hubs. The chain continues to operate San Diego locations in East Village, Liberty Station, Mission Valley, Pacific Beach and others.

JuneShine – Santa Monica and Scripps Ranch

Hard kombucha powerhouse officially exited the direct-to-consumer hospitality game on Aug. 28, shuttering its final company-owned taprooms in both Santa Monica and San Diego’s Scripps Ranch. The brand is focusing its efforts entirely now on wholesale distribution, marking the end of its taproom era. JuneShine was founded in 2018 by University of San Diego classmates Greg Serrao and Forrest Dein, and bubbled onto the scene as California’s first organic hard kombucha brewery. The closures cap a stunning reversal for a company that, not long ago, looked unstoppable.

Hearts Coffee Shop – Van Nuys

The Valley lost a serious old-school diner when Hearts Coffee Shop served its final customers on Aug. 9. It was a community staple since 1977, and had been the go-to spot for traditional American comfort food in a retro atmosphere in the San Fernando Valley. Its owners were reportedly ready to retire, while economic hits also factored into the decision to close.
