Feel like your energy fades fast? Most Americans operate on autopilot every day: survey

The average American hits their energy wall before 3 p.m. on any given day, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults revealed that by 2:48 p.m., their energy typically begins to fade, though one in five (21%) say it wanes before noon.

In fact, 82% of those polled feel like they’re operating their lives on “autopilot,” or just mindlessly going through the motions.

This may be tied to the pressure many feel to keep up with daily demands; 70% feel like they have to go above and beyond to do “the most” in every situation just to keep up with their lives.

Conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Breakstone’s, the survey found that for many Americans, feeling tired goes beyond simply needing more sleep; it’s about having less time and energy for the moments that matter most.

Busy days keep respondents from enjoying their hobbies (38%), taking care of their mental health (34%), and even exercising (31%).

The impact extends to personal relationships as well, with about one in four respondents saying busy days cause them to compromise time with loved ones (27%), hanging out with friends (26%), or even spending time with their significant other (23%).

Almost half of respondents (44%) even admit they frequently feel like they’re not fully present during meaningful moments.

As packed schedules take priority, many Americans are also sacrificing everyday routines, with 71% saying they skip or delay meals because they are too busy, doing so an average of three times (3.4) per week.

And even if they aren’t skipping meals, busy schedules keep most respondents (74%) from paying full attention to what they’re eating or drinking.

As busy schedules take a toll on daily routines, many Americans turn to quick solutions to power through especially hectic days. Americans rely on an average of three (3.2) “quick fixes” to power through.

Respondents are more likely to reach for a caffeinated beverage (29%) than a high-protein snack (21%) on particularly busy days.

Those who opt for caffeine average almost five caffeinated beverages per day (4.6), yet only 29% find this approach “very effective” when it comes to sustaining them for a full busy day.

In fact, these respondents say the effects wear off in about two hours (2.3), though 43% admit it’s before the two-hour mark.

Meanwhile, almost two in five (38%) of those who opt for protein find this approach “very effective” when managing busy days.

Despite recognizing the importance of protein, most respondents admit they, at least occasionally, realize that they’ve barely had any protein by the end of the day. SWNS

“The research highlights a disconnect between understanding the importance of protein and incorporating it consistently into daily routines,” said Amanda Vaal, Director of Brand Marketing at Breakstone’s. “While many Americans recognize protein’s role in their diet, busy schedules and packed days can make it challenging to prioritize.”

During a relaxed day, only one-third (32%) allocate 40 minutes or less to their meal times, but on particularly busy days, that number increases to 42%.

Almost two-thirds (62%) realize the importance of protein for their body but still struggle to regularly incorporate it into their diet.

Despite recognizing the importance of protein, most respondents (72%) admit they, at least occasionally, realize that they’ve barely had any protein by the end of the day.

“According to the results, only 25% of those polled are ‘very likely’ to increase their protein intake when they start feeling tired, highlighting an opportunity to build protein into daily routines before energy starts to dip,” said Vaal. “Simple habits like planning balanced meals, keeping protein-rich snacks readily available and making protein part of each meal can help make those routines easier to maintain.”

Research methodology:

Talker Research surveyed 2,000 general population Americans who have access to the internet; the survey was commissioned by Breakstone’s and administered and conducted online by Talker Research between July 9 and July 13, 2026.
