Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker O.J. Brigance has died after a 19-year battle with ALS, the team announced on Monday, August 17. He was 56.
“We are devastated by the awful news that we have lost O.J. Brigance,” Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said in a statement. “O.J. was a beloved legend, mentor and man to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. His infectious smile and the inspirational way he lived and played endeared him to everyone he touched, both inside our building and across this city. This is a tremendously sad day for Baltimore.”
Brigance was a member of the Ravens’ Super Bowl XXXV winning team in 2000-01, and rejoined the franchise after his playing days, serving as an adviser in player engagement. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2007, and at the time, was told he had between two and five years to live, according to ESPN.
“O.J. inspired us with humility, faithfulness, determination, competitiveness and love for humankind,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said, per ESPN. “We never once saw O.J. angry or frustrated by his disease. Instead, we all witnessed a hero who influenced so many people through his unwavering optimism and grit. O.J. Brigance is the definition of what it means to live like a Raven.”
Brigance continued to work with the Ravens as his condition deteriorated, attending games and practices in a motorized wheelchair, and communicating through eye-tracking technology after losing the ability to speak.
Throughout his battle, Brigance said he kept an “attacking mindset,” according to an interview with CBS Sports in 2013.
“I have discovered my gifts and directions for their use,” he told the outlet via email. “I have discovered the beautiful gift of time and making the most of it by enhancing the lives of others. So am I still on the attack, you bet I am!”

Brigance is survived by his wife, Chanda, with whom he founded the Brigance Brigade Foundation, which raises money to support those fighting ALS.
“O.J. was one of the most genuine, sincere people I have ever known,” Ravens senior vice president Ozzie Newsome said. “From the moment he arrived in Baltimore, you could feel his energy. His amazing smile, welcoming nature and infectious personality made everyone around him feel like family. He was a hero to this city long before his courageous battle with ALS and became an even greater inspiration in the way he faced it with the same fight, faith and grace he brought to the football field.”
