Castilla Termal, a luxury hotelier, has unveiled the sixth hotel in its portfolio – a restored Renaissance palace in the medieval village of Peñaranda de Duero.

Palacio de Avellaneda, an 80-key stay, took three years to restore, with rooms and suites now blending contemporary comforts with the palace’s 16th-century original architecture. A night’s stay in September starts at €314.60.

Built by the Zúñiga and Avellaneda family in the 16th century, the palace-turned-five-star hotel was declared a monument in 1923 before passing state hands in 1940.

The junior suite room includes a separate sitting area as well as views of the Plaza de los Duques de Miranda, while the larger suite also features frontal views of the Plaza.

When it comes to dining, guests will soon have two in-house concepts to choose from. Los Zúñiga Restaurant sits beneath the arches of the palace’s Renaissance cloister and serves local and seasonal produce. Its lunch and dinner service includes shareable dishes, such as a board of local cheeses with quince paste and dried fruit, fish, meat and salad dishes, as well as sweet treats.

The second restaurant, the Condes de Miranda Gastrobar, will open at a later date.

Beyond being a historic retreat, the stay is also a destination for rest and relaxation. The palace’s waters have been declared oligometallic mineral-medicinal and thermal water by the Regional Government of Castile and León’s authorities.

That therapeutic water is a core component of its wellness experiences, which include body scrubs, an array of massages and facials. There are also plans for a thermal pool and contrast circuit soon to come.

Four-legged guests are welcome, too. One dog is permitted per room with pre-reservation and the hotel will take care of its bedding and has space for dog walking. There is even a dedicated pet menu, with duck, chicken and lamb dishes on offer.
