EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CNS) — An East Los Angeles AutoZone was ransacked for the second time in 24 hours Sunday amid another large street takeover, authorities said.
More than 100 vehicles took part in the latest takeover, which occurred at about 3 a.m. Sunday at Olympic Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue, according to a watch commander at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s East Los Angeles station.
Video shows many people spilling out of the store with armloads of merchandise, many with their faces covered. The windows and doors were already boarded up from the break-in the day before.
The nearby AutoZone store at 1131 Atlantic Blvd. was attacked for the second consecutive day, but no arrests were reported in connection with any of the weekend’s burglaries or street takeovers, sheriff’s officials said.
The first illegal gathering took place around 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Atlantic and Olympic boulevards. A break-in occurred around the same time at the AutoZone, with burglars smashing a window and video showing merchandise strewn over the floor inside. No injuries were reported.
A couple of hours later on Saturday, another large takeover was reported in the Gramercy Park community of South Los Angeles in the area of Western Avenue and Century Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers found a large gathering, fireworks and a vehicle on fire in the middle of the road, Officer Rosario Cervantes of the LAPD’s Media Relations Division told City News Service.
No arrests were made, and no injuries were reported in that case either, Cervantes said.
The AutoZone manager says the store will be closed for two to three days while wiring and electrical systems are repaired. Employees will not be paid while the store is closed.
