7 On Your Side: The top back-to-school shopping tips to help families cut costs

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. () — As more than 44,000 students in the San Bernardino City Unified School District return to the classroom, families are looking for ways to manage back-to-school expenses that can quickly add up.

The average family will spend about $900 per child on school supplies so shoppers are being encouraged to compare prices and look for discounts before making purchases.

One option is shopping at Staples, where coupons are available through the store’s app, along with free giveaways with purchases and select items priced as low as 25 cents. Experts at NerdWallet say comparison shopping can help families find the best deals and maximize savings.

Shoppers also may benefit from using rewards credit cards that offer cash back or travel miles on purchases, according to NerdWallet. Another strategy is teaming up with other families to buy supplies in bulk.

“If you’re able to team up with a couple other families and buy supplies in bulk and then divide them amongst the families, that might be one way to save,” said Sara Rathner, a NerdWallet travel and credit cards expert.

Families looking to update their children’s wardrobes can also take advantage of discounts offered by Goodwill Southern California stores. Students and teachers can receive 10% off purchases through Aug. 31.

Before buying new items, shoppers are encouraged to check around their homes for unused or leftover school supplies from the previous year that can be reused.

Some parents say budgeting and making the most of existing resources are important lessons for their children.

“I teach my kids to be grateful, to appreciate what they have and what we can do for them,” said Wendy Henriquez, a back-to-school shopper.

Other shoppers say convenience is a major factor when purchasing school supplies.

“For one stop, you can just come through here and pick up everything you need. It’s convenient,” said Phyllis Martinez, a shopper.

With the school year beginning, families are balancing costs, discounts and shopping strategies as they prepare students for the classroom.
