Amy’s Kitchen recalls more than 184K soup cans over spoilage concerns

Soup’s off.

A popular vegetarian brand is recalling a canned soup over spoilage concerns.

Amy’s Kitchen has issued a voluntary recall of more than 184,000 cans of soup. The product in question was sold in 20 US states and parts of Canada at popular chains such as Whole Foods, Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons, as well as online through retailers like Amazon.

The recall, which was initiated on June 22, 2026, is still ongoing and has been linked to a defect in the can’s easy-open pull tab that makes the product vulnerable to spoilage.

“The defect could cause the product to spoil, and the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the quality and safety of our products,” said an Amy’s spokesperson.

The compromised cans are Amy’s Kitchen Organic Lentil Soup – Light in Sodium, Lot Number: 60D0924 with a best-by date of April 2027.

Gluten-free, vegan, and plant-based, the soup contains green lentils, celery, carrots, and potatoes. On its website, Amy’s describes the veggie staple as picky-eater approved: “This tasty soup has a rich, satisfying flavor, and the lentils are a good source of protein.”

More than 15,350 cases of the soup have been recalled.

The dubious cans were distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

No other lot numbers or Amy’s products are affected by the recall.

Per the FDA’s report, the recall is categorized as a Class II recall, defined as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

It’s been a heavy season for food recalls.

This week, 19 million eggs were recalled over possible Salmonella contamination, and a mess of organic fruit puree pouches were recalled due to an “internal packaging defect.”

Earlier this month, Pillsbury pulled 735,000 bread rolls from shelves due to concerns the products may contain glass.

Most notably, produce giant Taylor Farms recalled several lettuce products after a cyclospora outbreak sickened hundreds of people in five states.

Cyclospora causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness whose most common symptom is prolonged diarrhea. It can also cause stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, bloating, weight loss, and low-grade fever, according to the CDC.

People with weakened immune systems, the elderly, or children can experience more severe illness, the FDA says.

California-based Taylor Farms products are sold through major retailers including Target, Walmart, Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh, according to its website.

“As a family-owned company, we are deeply concerned for those who became ill, their families, and the Americans whose trust in the safety of fresh produce has been shaken,” the company said in a statement last week.
