‘World’s most isolated’ oasis miles off US coast doubles as motorized boat — there’s a catch before booking

A Spanish travel influencer recently shared his experience at one of the most unique “hotels” that can be found in the Pacific Ocean between Florida and Cuba.

Ruben Holgado, a 23-year-old from Barcelona, shared a lengthy video on his YouTube channel in May, which amassed more than 896,000 views, where he calls it the “most isolated hotel in the world.”

He recently posted a truncated version of the video on Instagram, which amassed almost 95,000 likes, and spoke about his experience in an interview with CreatorZine.

Holgado flew 10 hours from Barcelona to Miami, and then drove five more hours to Key West, before boarding a boat to a tiny houseboat dubbed Tiki Suite on AirBnB.

The “hotel” is only accessible by boat, an hour’s ride from Key West, and it comes with some unique entanglements, with Holgado revealing he had to get a boating license to stay there, since it qualified as a “vessel.”

The experience won’t come cheap, with a five-night stay priced at $3,458.

“Swimming there would have been completely unrealistic because I was travelling with camera equipment, luggage and fishing gear,” Holgado told CreatorZine.

He revealed in the video that the property’s owner — dubbed Captain Chris — gave him a list of supplies to buy for the stay, and offered some warnings about wildlife.

Captain Chris told him to stay close to the sea and told him, “it would not have been the first time someone needed rescuing.”

“He also warned me about the sharks. Key West is known for having a large shark population, which definitely added to the feeling of adventure,” Holgado added.

He added that a, “tropical storm rolled in and for a while I started questioning whether staying alone in the middle of the ocean was such a good idea,” though the storm passed without incident.

The listing on AirBnB mentions that Tiki Suites is in the platform’s Top 10% of homes, with the listing branding it as a, “peaceful, off-grid glamping experience you won’t find anywhere else.”

It added that visitors often see dolphins, manatees, rays, and schools of tropical fish passing by the small houseboat, with amenities that include an air conditioning system, a custom oak bed and a hidden TV.

Holgado’s video revealed that the houseboat comes with a few DVD options, including “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Django Unchained,” “The Aviator” and “The Notebook.”

However, he added, “since we are in the middle of the sea,” he decided to watch the final option in the movie pile, James Cameron’s “Titanic.”

The 31-minute video also shows him heading out to go snorkeling to see sunken ships, doing some paddle boarding and even fishing for his dinner.

“The experience felt peaceful, adventurous and slightly intimidating all at the same time. It is probably best suited to adventurous people who enjoy unusual destinations and being away from civilization for a while.”
