LOS CABOS, Mexico — Several people were injured Wednesday night when a vehicle caught in celebrations following Mexico’s victory over the Czech Republic tried to evade the crowd and, after accelerating, struck an multiple fans celebrating the national team’s 3-0 win in the tourist city of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, authorities said.
Los Cabos police said in a statement that the driver, “after being surrounded by people who were blocking the way and exerting physical pressure on the vehicle, made a sudden acceleration maneuver, resulting in several pedestrians being struck.”
At least 17 people were injured, including the driver, according to Los Cabos officials. The driver of the vehicle was detained at the scene and transported to the hospital under police custody, according to officials.
The prosecutor’s office said it has opened an investigation into what happened.
Videos posted on social media showed fans rocking the car as it tried to pass along a street taken over by celebrations. The revelers were shouting and chanting until the vehicle accelerated and, after hitting several people, crashed into what appeared to be a street post.
The investigation remains ongoing.
