Eyewitness Newsmakers: How you and your vote are kept safe amid election threats

LOS ANGELES () — During each election cycle, worry increases about the safety and security of our voting process and the people who administer it.

Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan discussed the multiple layers of checks and balances to make sure voting is done in an open, secure and transparent manner during Eyewitness Newsmakers with Marc Brown.

“There’s the ability for voters to track their own ballot. There’s the ability for interested parties to come in and observe the process. We livestream our process from our ballot processing center, and we conduct audits after Election Day to make sure that everything is as intended,” Logan said.

Logan said the county’s system is regularly blocking attempts by cybercriminals trying to access voter records.

“That’s an area that I think has been particularly changed over the last, I would say, decade or so, is that we have to have in our operation, we have to have a cybersecurity team that is monitoring 24/7 to make sure that that remains secure and that we have adequate backups. So in the event that there was a disruptive event, that we can still carry out the election,” Logan said.

Keeping you and your vote safe during elections is a team effort between many organizations, including law enforcement. Authorities monitor polling stations and drop boxes, making sure they’re both protected for voters and election workers. Several bomb threats were made in our area last year as ballots were being counted. Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said the security plan is always evolving.

“There’s also this emergent threat that’s happened in the last several election cycles of doxing not only elected officials, but also people who work in the Registrar’s Office, to try to influence them or deter them from doing their job. So, the threat has really gotten so much broader than just influence,” Barnes said. “It’s not as simple as it used to be, of just trying to protect the ballot. You have to protect the entire integrity of the system today. That’s much more difficult. We do that in many different ways, months, years before the election cycle even starts.”
