Community mourns death of teenage boy shot and killed in East Los Angeles

EAST LOS ANGELES () — Loved ones are desperate for answers after a teenage boy was shot and killed in East Los Angeles.

The victim’s friends say Joshua was a boxing coach with a bright future ahead, and they have no idea who would shoot him.

As homicide investigators continue their search for the suspect in Joshua’s death, Eyewitness News returned to the East L.A. neighborhood where the shooting unfolded and spoke firsthand with those who knew the victim.

“I feel devastated, heartbroken because he was like my brother,” said David Ventura, a friend of the victim.

A growing memorial in the teen’s neighborhood features flowers, flickering candles, a photo of Joshua and handwritten notes. One reads, “Josh, my heart is broken forever.” Another says, “Long live Joshua.”

“He’s a very sweet person, and this should never happen to anybody. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody,” said Jayden Garcia, one of Joshua’s friends.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide investigators are continuing their search for the suspect. They say the shooting happened just after 1 a.m. on Saturday near 6th Street and Fraser Avenue.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a juvenile victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the suspect got in a dark-colored SUV before speeding away.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this, you know? Like, he was such a good kid, like, he was a good friend. He was a hard worker. He was a great coach,” Ventura said.

Friends told Eyewitness News the teen was a boxing coach at a gym in the area.

“We bonded over wanting to become pro in boxing and him wanting to become a professional boxing coach,” Garcia said.

With his dreams cut short, loved ones are now left seeking justice.

“I just wish the people that did this, come up front and say, you know, why y’all did it. And you know, give justice to my brother,” Ventura said.

The sheriff’s department says it’s unknown if the shooting was gang-related. They are, however, asking for the public’s help.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
