AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) — Four people have been injured across multiple shootings in Austin, Texas, overnight, authorities say, with three suspects now in custody.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said multiple shootings happened across the city, primarily in south Austin, starting on Saturday night and going into Sunday. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed there were 12 incidents in total.
Officials said four people were shot, with one person seriously injured.
Investigators said there is no motive and that the shootings “appear to be random.” Officials said the suspect vehicles involved include a black or blue Hyundai, a gold Hyundai, a silver Mazda, and a white Kia Optima. Officials said the suspects appeared to have been changing cars during the incidents. Police said they also believe the weapons used in the shootings were stolen.
Police said the suspects have been identified as Hispanic men in their late teens. In an update on Sunday afternoon, police said that two suspects, 15 and 17 years old, are in custody, with one still at large. Later in the evening, police shared that the third suspect was detained following a pursuit in the Manor area, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time.
Officials initially advised south Austin residents to shelter in place. In a post on social media on Sunday afternoon, police said the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
City officials advised citizens on Sunday to remain vigilant and call 911 if they notice anything suspicious. Authorities also reminded the public not to leave their cars unlocked and not to leave keys in their vehicles.
