Bear chases chickens, frightens neighbors in Shadow Hills

SHADOW HILLS, LOS ANGELES () — A bear sighting in Shadow Hills left neighbors buzzing on Saturday night.

Neighbors were on alert as the bear chased chickens and knocked over trash cans.

For some neighbors, it was their first time seeing a wild bear in person.

The bear really knew how to put on a show, especially for one captivated neighbor who captured video of it.

“He’s a pretty big boy!” neighbor Cindy Frith-Smith said as she captured the video. “Oh mom, he’s going up the tree!”

A hiker found himself in a scary situation when he came face-to-face with a large bear that charged at him as he tried to scare it away. It was all caught on video.

Frith-Smith spotted the bear on Saturday as it casually strolled through her mother’s backyard in Shadow Hills.

“I was so excited, and they kept telling me to go back in, but I wanted to see the bear,” she said.

And so did the neighborhood kids, with some of them bewildered by the bear sighting.

“I’ve never seen this. This is crazy. How did it just randomly get here?” said Bobby Avakin.

“I was like, ‘It’s so cute,'” Sawyer Laney said.

A Fillmore community is at ease again after a large bear was spotted wandering through a residential neighborhood Wednesday before being tranquilized.

As the bear roamed the neighborhood, Los Angeles police kept an eye on it. At one point, they pulled out long guns just in case the bear’s energy took a turn.

The bear eventually left the neighborhood without incident. Police say it’s now back in its natural habitat in the mountains.

“In my opinion, I think he was just hungry,” Avakin said.

The sighting is a reminder to keep areas around your home free of food and garbage that could attract wildlife, big and small.

“It was just totally unexpected. And it made for a little entertainment,” Frith-Smith said.

If you ever encounter a bear, experts say it’s better to back away slowly rather than running.
