JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. () — A brush fire in Jurupa Valley Wednesday afternoon forced evacuations after threatening homes and growing to more than 30 acres.
In an update around 6:45 p.m., fire officials said crews stopped the blaze’s forward rate of spread. Cal Fire estimated the fire to be about about 34 acres in size and containment at 25%.
The blaze was reported just after 4 p.m. in the area of Yearling Way and Baldwin Avenue, just east of the Van Buren Boulevard corridor, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for properties on Yearling Way, nearby Gray Mare Drive and 58th Street, while warnings were declared for residential areas to the north and east of the fire.
Sheriff’s deputies shut down access to Yearling Way and several neighboring streets.
One witness says she saw at least one home on fire. Some people used garden hoses to wet down their properties to try to fight the flames.
Two people were taken to a hospital for possible smoke inhalation, according to fire officials.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
