GLENDALE, Calif. () — With a quick splash and yellow flash, $10,000 could be yours next month.
The Kiwanis Club of Glendale will make waves May 2 as it takes over Verdugo Park for its 21st annual Incredible Duck Splash.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the club will gather a massive hoard of rubber duckies ready to take a dip for a good cause.
“We will race 20,000 rubber ducks,” former Glendale Police Chief Carl Povilaitis said. “It takes a bit of work. We literally have to build two lakes, and it’s only there for a day.”
Each rubber duck can be adopted for $5, with proceeds supporting the Kiwanis Club’s mission to build a healthier and safer Glendale for our next generation of leaders.
The club supports youth programming, from leadership trainings to emphasis on literacy, good sportsmanship and community development.
Povilaitis, an immediate past president of the club, said five heats will be held on race day, sending thousands of ducks cascading between two man-made lakes.
Winners from each heat will be gathered for one final race at 2 p.m., with a $10,000 prize awaiting the winning duck’s adoptive parents.
A $1,000 prize will be issued for second and third place, $500 for fourth and fifth, and a $500 gift card will be awarded to one lucky “Quack Pack” participant.
Participants at the Saturday afternoon event can also enjoy access to food vendors, games and activities outside the race course.
