WESTLAKE, LOS ANGELES () — A homeless encampment has overtaken a post office parking lot in the Westlake District, prompting neighbors to demand action from city leaders.
The homeless encampment got some attention on social media this week after a woman highlighted its size, saying the tents have gotten out of control.
The encampment surrounds a post office on West 7th Street. Tents are packed in an alleyway and occupy parking spaces intended for the post office.
“Well, obviously a post office parking lot is intended for the patrons of the post office, so here we have people congregating in areas that are intended for other purposes due to lack of a better situation,” said Theresa Daniel, who lives in the area.
Norm Langer, owner of Langer’s Deli, said the conditions around the post office have made people feel unsafe.
“It’s just dirty, it’s just filthy and the city is not keeping it clean,” Langer added.
Eunisses Hernandez, the City Council member whose district includes the area, said in a statement that her office is coordinating with outreach services and plans to clean up the site next week.
Hernandez also pointed to work done several times a week to remove bulky items and bags of litter within five blocks of MacArthur Park.
The office of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass also issued a statement, describing the conditions outside the post office as “unacceptable” and said the office will work with Hernandez to address the site.
