It seemed to be more of a nightmare than a dream.
Barbie fans were left utterly disappointed after experiencing what was supposed to be a fun-filled, glittery weekend full of immersive attractions and themed installations at the Barbie Dream Fest festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Comparing it to 2024’s Willy Wonka Experience, a similar type of event that was a major fail, or 2017’s disastrous music event, Frye Festival, Dream Fest ticketholders were anything but impressed by the mediocre three-day event held in Broward County Convention Center this past weekend.
The Mattel-organized event had the nerve to charge Barbie fans $72 for a single-day pass and up to $452.50 for VIP ticket holders, which included a lame “swag bag” that consisted of a measly plastic hairbrush and hand sanitizer that one attendee criticized in a Reddit forum: “Not even touch land. Dollar store brand. Jeez.”
Pictures and videos posted online by displeased attendees showed flimsy set designs and activations, like a sad-looking “Roller Disco” rink and bicycle course that no one should partake in, even for free.
One festival-goer who spent close to $1,000 for tickets and travel accommodations took to Reddit to air out their grievances on how poorly executed the event was.
“Immediately, I was disappointed as getting to the convention center was chaotic. There were no signs pointing on how to get into the convention center, and Google was telling me to go around the convention center to the back and the Fort Lauderdale police telling me to go to the cruise terminal, I got lost and I was very frustrated…” they wrote.
In addition to that, they shared how terrible the programming was, explaining how “…There were 5 or 6 different ballrooms that you had to figure out which one your program was in and there was no schedule available. You had to look online and hope that it was accurate, but then things got canceled and moved, and you didn’t know where they were going.”
“Flabbergasted, I went to guest services and I just asked, ‘I’m sorry, is this it? The lady looked disappointed and said ‘Yeah, we’ve gotten that question a lot. But as far as vendors are concerned, this is it’ I was defeated,” the Reddit user wrote.
The honest post was filled with over 200 comments from other ticket-goers who felt the same way.
“This is awful. It’s like they didn’t even try to sell booths / get vendors. Who the h–l was in charge of this? I’ve been to small local toy shows that had 10x this many vendors. This is awful for an event that Mattel promoted and planned,” read one disappointed comment.
On X (formerly Twitter), one attendee showed a glimpse into what the Reddit user was complaining about, writing, “I’m screaming,” with many chiming in.
“This is so Willy Wonka experience coded,” one pointed out.
“How does this keep happening? What is causing organizers to completely forget the scale of their venue compared to their decor and set-ups,” another questioned.
